Baldoyle United are through to the second round of the Club Orange Mens FAI Cup after winning a tightly fought contest with Leicester Celtic on Sunday. A goal in each half saw United overcome the visitors.
Baldoyle United opened the scoring on the 24 minute. A smart move up the right saw Alex Mooney finish superbly after being put through by Brandon Nangle. While Baldoyle dominated possession in the first 45 minutes it was a half of few chances. Leicester Celtic were denied by a fine save by Baldoyle keeper Stephen Lyons to ensure the home side went in ahead at the break.
Leicester Celtic came out fighting in the second half but despite creating chances the Baldoyle defence soaked up the pressure. Then in the 88th minute Baldoyle talisman Cian Leeson secured a historic spot in the second round of the FAI Cup with a clever finish at the second attempt.
A historic and emotional day for Baldoyle who remembered the recently passed Gerry Cosgrave, founder member, with a minutes silence before the game. As Westlife's Nicky Byrne said: " What a day for the parish!"
Baldoyle United will be in the draw on 3 June for the FAI Cup Round 2 along with League of Ireland giants like Shelbourne, Shamrock Rovers and Bohemians.
